English as a Second Language or Dialect (EALD)
Our EAL/D Unit provides a variety of support services for students whose first language is not English and who have been in Australia for five years or less. Students may join the ESL programme from:
- Milpera State High School (Chelmer)
- local primary schools
- directly from overseas (students with prior English language instruction)
Learners are placed in EAL/D classes where they continue to receive intensive English support while they are gradually integrated into mainstream classes. Placement depends on their chronological age, educational background and their language development needs.
We support students by:
- providing Years 7-10 English, Humanities, Science and Math classes aligned to the Australian curriculum but which focus on explicit language instruction
- providing in-class support for EAL/D students in mainstream classes and tutorial assistance out of class for all year levels as necessary
